Great question that I have been wanting to ask as well. Looking forward to hearing from someone that has been there & done that. The people I have talked with say its not a no brainer but do-able. Sounds like shimming the gears to get the correct mesh is the magic.
Thanks for the compliments guys! That is one of those jobs that I have always wanted to try. I made that post in hopes that someone would find it via archive search and benefit from it. Makes the posting effort very worthwhile knowing that fellow forum members are finding it to be useful. It's not often that I can supply a significant contribution but I'm happy to do so when ever I can.
Before I started that job, norvalwilhelm assured me that he would be available for online tech assistance if I were to need it. Knowing that I had "back-up" certainly helped my confidence.
Tom454, I ended up with TWO complete sets of ring gear bolts. I have NO use for the extras. You are welcomed to have them if you want (free). E-mail your address to me and I will send them.
I was going to buy the whole pumpkin from Mid America for $799.00 with $300.00 core charge....Looks like you guys have found a cheaper way of replacing gear ratios....Wish I was that talented...
Thanks for the great posts. Looks like this is do-able but would be best as a winter project. Really great post by MIKER. From what I can tell it would cost at least 700-800 bucks for the labor if I had a shop do it, so it will have to wait until next winter.
Also with the low 700r4 first gear and the 2.72 rear how close is the total gear ratio (in 1st) to a th400 with a 3.73 (in 1st). I'm sure someone out there has looked at these numbers.........
