I have 3 questions. I’m planning to replace the hood release cable on my ’72. Many on this forum recommend using the GM replacement part. All the Chevy dealers I’ve contacted say the part has been discontinued. So where do you buy a genuine GM replacement cable? Can I replace the T handle, cable, and cable housing without replacing the bracket? How do you get to the bolts that attach the bracket?
Thanks for your help.
forget about those two bolts that attach the bracket. i think you have to go up thru the exhaust pipe to get to them! if your hood cable hasn't broken leave it alone and run an extra cable. i got some 3/32" braded cable at ace hardware, drilled a 1/4" hole in the firewall near the existing hood cable, glued a 12"(about) of 1/4" hose in the hole with weatherstrip adhesive(just so the steel cable wouldn't contact the fuse panel),attached one end to the release lever, passed the cable thru the hose, placed a loop in the cable for a pull handle, and taped it to the existing hood release bracket.
or, if you really have to change it, just use the existing bracket and slide the new cable/handle assembly into the old bracket.
