Newly built 350 installed with pre-existing components and all is well except the power steering pulley alignment. It's not an issue of total fore and aft positioning. The "outboard" rim of the pulley is a bit foreward of the "inboard" rim. Belt was thrown off initially and I have one that works but am sure it's putting a stress on the pump shaft and failure is going to be the result. The only thing I can think of that would cause this is I switched to solid motor mounts and the area of the bracket that bolts through the mount might be thicker and cants the pump when installed. I thought it might be the pump, but it was fine on "Old Wheezie". I am thinking of trying to shim behind where the bracket bolts to the water pump area to see if that would move the inboard pulley rim forward relative to the outboard rim. Any thoughts or experiences with this type of issue? No pics available at the moment.
Do you have a pump with a interference fit pulley or one with a key way and nut? The newer interference fit pump and pulley started in 1975 on all GM cars. It specifies that you press the pulley flush to the end of the pump shaft. But has a little leeway in both directions to allow you to center the pulley.
The old style pump, key, and pulley nut (before 1975) does not allow any possibility of adjusting the pulley on the pumpshaft. You are stuck with shimming the pump, obtaining different brackets, or a different pulley.
