82 fuel pump replacement

82 fuel pump replacement
I need some advice on replacing a 82 fuel pump with a 85 pump. I removed the fuel door and rubber boot and notice that the sending unit is not even in the center of the fuel door opening . I plan to do the changeover with the tank attached. Do i need to loosen the straps to center up the tank with the fuel door opening for a easier removal?

The sender will not come straight out....it takes a bit of a twisting motion.
Tap around the opening and a little more to prevent scratching the paint.

To make the extraction and reinstall easier, loosen the clamp on the R rear that holds the fuel and return lines, just take the bolt out, Then the fuel hoses will be easier to deal with.
After removing the mount bolts and disconnecting the electrical remove the R (Fuel) hoses first the move the assy to the R and remove the vent hose. A twist on the assy. to clear opening.
