Default 82 fuel pump replacement

I need some advice on replacing a 82 fuel pump with a 85 pump. I removed the fuel door and rubber boot and notice that the sending unit is not even in the center of the fuel door opening . I plan to do the changeover with the tank attached. Do i need to loosen the straps to center up the tank with the fuel door opening for a easier removal? Thanks in advance

Maybe not, mine is slightly off center too but it did come out through the door without loosening off the tank.

The sender will not come straight out....it takes a bit of a twisting motion.

Tap around the opening and a little more to prevent scratching the paint.

I am curious about the soldering in the new harness wires and need to know about the old fuel pump ground wire soldered to the metal arm holding the capacitor, is the capacitor needed.?

Thanks

I don't know. I bought an original Delco several years ago and it was plug and play. There was an adapter harness.

Maybe some one else will come along with an answer.

Yes, keep the capacitor. Solder and heat shrink the new harness to the existing wires.

Just removed my pump, didn't loosen or drop tank. Just twist and move around, it will come out. use painters tape on car covered with duct tape to prevent scratching the area. Hope all goes well.

To make the extraction and reinstall easier, loosen the clamp on the R rear that holds the fuel and return lines, just take the bolt out, Then the fuel hoses will be easier to deal with.
After removing the mount bolts and disconnecting the electrical remove the R (Fuel) hoses first the move the assy to the R and remove the vent hose. A twist on the assy. to clear opening.
