If it's the engine oil drain plug, you should be able to just put a wrench on it and turn it. If you can't, you have something weird going on there.........

As a teen, I once stripped out the head of a drain-plug on a '79 Plymouth Horizon; all because I got my orientiation mixed up when upside down and with the drain-plug facing away from me, I was *tightening* rather than loosening the plug...

I filed the outside flats down to 12mm, and it came off as soon as I turned it the proper way.

But on my '71, mine loosens with a simple box-wrench.

Look at post number 9 in my thread here (I have a photo of mine).. I have a 71 and getting the plug out is a pain. I am getting an aftermarket with the drain off to the side http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-g...otor-71-a.html

i use a box end and only a box end, it grips all around and grips well that way. a socket is hard because it can get crooked and slip off. its just not as secure to me.

Get a 5/8" open end wrench and, after a few yoga lessons, you can wiggle your hand in there and unscrew the filler plug. Easier, probably, if you loosen it while the car is up on jacks or ramps. You just have to refill it while the car is level. If you can't get under it while it's on the ground, back it onto the ramps, set the parking brake firmly, and then lift the front and jack stand it. Not easy, but doable.

Our wonderful Vette Differentials are easy to service, because there is only 1 plug to remove! No need to remove 2, because there is only 1!

I don't know about a socket. I think I used a big wrench. The trick is getting to it, which is made a lot easier by removing one of the rear wheels... the passenger side I think.
