Put a new starter on my 75, small block. everytime I turn the ignition it clicks once. About every fourth time it will engage the starter and start the motor. I returned the starter and got another starter, same thing. Took it to a shop, had battery and charging system checked, all are OK. Do I need to shim the starter or any other ideas. Thanks in advance.
Usually a starter that is not shimmed from the factory pretty much never needs to be shimmed unless the block has been milled.
That being said two problems come to mind. First sand paper the block and the starter were they meet assuming you checked your cables and connections already. Second, this is more common than you think. take your starter bolts an roll them on a flat surface, If one of them has the slightest bow to them it will throw your starter off! Don't try to straighting the bolt just go to a GM dealer and buy new ones
