I read in a previous post about how L48's are 2 bolts and L82's are 4. I thought that mine was an original L48, but it is a 4 bolt. Here are the numbers on the block:
<small> TSU506816 <larger, but worn, hard to read> VU206TJJ
Are there other numbers I need to look at, or if not, where do I look up these numbers?
L82 has 4-bolt, L48 has 2-bolt. Looks to me like you have a truck engine. TSU506816 should be the VIN deritive where the last six match the last six of your VIN, but those don't look right. The VU206TJJ, the TJJ is the engine useage. Usualy those starting with T are truck engines. A lot of the truck engines are 4-bolt mains so yours may be 4-bolt, just that it is not the original engine.
The TJJ suffix was used twice, first in 1973 as a 350ci/155hp in C-30 & 3500 trucks, then in 1976 as a 350/165hp in C-10 & 1500 trucks.
In '79 the usage codes for the Vette were ZAA, ZAB,ZAC, ZAD, ZAF, ZAJ for the L48 and ZBA and ZBB for the L82.
So, assuming that this is one of the truck engines... The difference between this and an L-82 would be what? Head flow numbers, compression probably, and cam... anything else? I'm going to get a set of aftermarket heads (don't know which yet) and a cam, so that won't be a problem.

Yup - Tom's right on the money ! ...that's a truck engine -but it'll have a strong bottom end....just ditch the heads & get some double-humps or alum. aftermarket if ya wanna go fast !
Are you saying that it has a forged crank, anything else? Are you also saying that me having a truck engine in my Vette may be a GOOD thing? :p:
Truck engines varied a lot. Could be it has a very strong lower end. Could be it doesn't. You will have to pull it apart to find out. But you can be sure that it has low compression pistons. Crank, rods, and main bearings caps could be what you need, but probably nothing else. Will need higher compression, new heads, good cam, and better intake.
