82 fuel sock replacement

I am replacing my 82 fuel pump with a 85 pump and I am ready to re-install except I am not sure in what direction the fuel sock installs. If i install it like it was removed the long side of the sock is in-line with the fuel return tube and blocking flow. Please Advise

Thanks for your help

I had to pull my 82 pump/sender from tank last week because a bumpy road caused the pump hose to disconnect. I replaced the hose and sock and had the same question about the sock. I googled "82 corvette fuel pump images" and found a picture of the unit and used it as a guide.
