I am looking at buying a 69 Vette with a BB. Car originally came with a SB. The owner says the hood is off because it will not close with the BB. Are their two different BB hoods and will either one fit? Any ideas on the price I should be looking at for a hood?
there is the normal bb hood which is the same as the LT1 hood and there is the L-88 hood..either should fit...i have seen them for as much as 700us..you should be able to pick up a used one for much less....
yes, but not knowing what bigblock engine, intake and carb is in the car now, we really cant say for sure that the regular bigblock hood will clear, can we?? MJ
Check to see what intake and carb (spacer maybe) setup you have. I know that in my car, I need the L-88 design. My intake is the Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap. The stud out of the Holley just clears the hood.
In order to use the stock BB hood the engine MUST have the correct sunken (extra low rise corvette only) manifold and the correct drop base air cleaner. Any mods will require the L-88 BB hood.. The are however a few aftermarket hoods that will work. Some of them eliminate the wiper door set-up which may or may not be what you want to do so that is why you will see two different lenghts. There are plenty of options available.. Depending on what you what you want.
The Hi Rise hood has 1/2" more clearance than the L-88 hood. However, L-88 hoods will clear most "normal" BB installations. Mine's an L-88 from Eckler's.

Yup - silvervetteman has the answer ! :D
....by the way - my hood is the 'stock' non-L88 BB hood with the 'correct' manifold & block (not date matching but correct for a vette).
Some BB's are tall decks, too which only add to the problem of hood clearance.
The clearance with the stock 390,400, and 435 hp setups and a "normal" BB hood is VERY tight (less than 1/2 inch), so go with the L-88 style unless your trying to make it look original.
My hood was fabricated by a previous owner to allow plenty of room for the high rise intake. I can't say if I will keep the hood or the 454 in the future due to this delima.
