Default It's ALWAYS somethin'........

My '78 is really coming together nicely. But today I spent like 2 1/2 hrs installing the friggin' trans dipstick, lol Couldn't get my hand in there, had to remove trans mount to drop trans a bit, still wouldn't go-finally wound up grinding down the dipstick bracket and it went-JESUS.

Then I installed a stud kit for the headers, Hooker Supercomps-need I say more on that? Using a hammer to install headers is just wrong.

Then I bought the teeniest, tiniest air filter I could find. 6 1/2" diameter by 2" height. God damn hood will not close, lol

It's cause of the single plane intake, guess I'll be needing a new hood.
Looking at vfn and glasstek right now, any opinions?

Always somethin'...............

Get a 14 x 3" air cleaner with a drop base by at least 1 1/2". It will work as long as you have a manifold no higher than a Performer RPM.

Take the air cleaner off, and see if the hood closes. If it does, take a piece of heavy plastic and put it across the carb, and put some Play-doh on the highest points of the carb, then shut the hood. (the plastic is to keep the Play-doh out of the engine) This should tell you how much clearance you are dealing with. Let us know what you come up with.

Thx guys. I have a single plane intake, no 14" filter will clear the hood far as I can tell.
I have something in mind and I like the play dough idea-I'll steal some from my kids.

Your clearance problem may be what carburetor you are using and not the intake. There are many people using an Air Gap intake and Holley carb under a stock hood. The clay will tell you what clearance you have to work with. The Moroso drop base works very well, but might need some massaging. I needed to take a ball peen hammer to mine to clear part of the Holley carb. If you also need clearance, put the base against a shot bag before you start pounding. You don't want to warp it out of shape, or the air filter won't seal on the base.

I have my stud cut down to minimal clearance height and my wing nut, wings trimmed down for clearance. I have seen guys close their hood only to find the air cleaner stud poking through their fresh painted hood. That has to hurt!!

If you can't get enough clearance to run an adequate air filter, you might dare to be different. A shaker hood might not look bad through a Corvette hood. The engine is off-set, so you would need to make a shaker air box that would center it through the hood. It wouldn't surprise me to find most of the materials available at Jeg's, Speedway, or Summit.
Good luck with finding required clearance.

Thx Red 69. I am using a Holley Quickfuel 650.
The clearance issue is in the front part of the filter, the hood I have has a 2" cowl on it but it just slopes down in just the wrong spot, lol.
I do like the shaker hood idea, I ordered a carb mount scoop yesterday (ebay) and it looks to have some adjustment on it so I'm pretty confident that I will be able to center it to the hood (even if it takes little persuation).
I may even wind up using a 1"-2" carb spacer to get the height just right, that will give me plenty more room for the direct port nitrous set up I'll be running and little more performance to boot.

I have a Performer manifold on my 75.

I switched to an air cleaner that had the filter media on top of the as well as the sides and has a 2" drop base.

Check out my photo album I have pictures.

Headers should have been the easiest project you have done.
1: you didnt need a stud kit
2: headers fit so well that they will fall all the way out if you don't sit them on something while you climb out from under the car.

I used a stud kit because I have aluminum heads.
If you yourself want to use normal style bolts in your aluminum heads on your car and risk cross threading that is your choice, this is my car and that was my choice.
I had a couple trouble spots on the headers, I'm not the first-won't be the last.

Man that looks good in there. Thx for the pic.
This is the intake I'm dealing with so you can see how high it is.

OH Baby that's nice.

I have Aluminum heads also, I wasn't aware of a benefit of studs over bolts in Aluminum.

Some said studs instead of head bolts, but the ZZ4 came with bolts.

That intake DOES sit pretty high...

I bought a new airfilter base when I did my top end rebuild, but it didn't clear my hood, either, even after yanking out the insulation. So I took my stock base, and sawed off the side walls, making it an open element filter, and used that instead. Fits perfect.

I'm running a Performer under the "stock" (with Lars mods) QuadraJet in my '80 and am using the factory dual snorkel air cleaner with both sets of intake ducting. Plenty of room.
