Setting timing

Just curious, instead of disconnecting the est wire prior to setting the timing on my 82, couldn't I also just put the computer is diagnostic mode using the paperclip thing into the OBD connector? Doesn't that do the same thing as disconnecting the computer from controlling the distributor?

Wow, this must be a tough question. Lot of views, no comments. Read elsewhere about other cars and years and this is the approach until setting timing no longer needed.

When doing it the way the factory recommended is so easy, it's most likely that nobody has tried it the other way.

I hear a different drummer. Hoping I could actually set the timing with Winaldl until I thought about it more.
