Electric fan / temp question

Default Electric fan / temp question
I am just wondering what turns on the electric fan. This would seem like a stupid question (it even sounds stupid to me), but the electric fan on my 79 L82 Auto runs at strange times.

Sometimes when my guage gets above 160, the fan is not on. Other times when it is considerably below that, the electric fan is running like crazy.

Why?

The fan will come on any time the AC is on . The rest of the time it is temerature controlled

my 79 has an electric fan too...i thought it was an add on...did they come on these c3's???
