I installed a msd billet distributor and 6al this afternoon as directions stated I just wondered if the positive wire going to a 1971 coil is how do I want to say it 12V steady??? Anyway, I noticed the car wanted to run then all of a sudden stall. I have a fuel gauge on my line and its only getting 3 lbs so not sure if I have a fuel problem or not. I have edelbrock pump to install tomm. Before with the point it would fall on its face when I'd smash on it during test runs, with this pump I have, so it was either a fuel delivery problem or ignition trouble. I only had it running on the lift tonight and thought I read somewhere on here to not run that coil wire cause it was regulated and to run one right from the fuse box to the MSD box. I have my timing at 32 total at 3k with the advance line off is this good to start?
thanks,
It's been a few years since I installed mine, but I believe they instruct you not to use that wire. They say to use a 12v source. I connected to the fuse box. If I am correct they give you a long *** wire to do this. Good luck with the install, I have not regretted and recommended it to all my buddies.
I changed the fuel pump to a high volume holley now I get 6# at all times. I didn't mess with the wiring the book said to use that wire and it all seems to be fine now. Now I just have to play with the timing and carb tuning. What a difference with fuel pressure.
With the MSD box the only wires running to the coil should be the orange and black from the ignition box. The heavy red wire goes straight to the battery and the light red gets switched positive.
I have my MSD behind the pass egg crate on my 71. I used the existing coil wire (blue and yellow?) for the switched source. And used the battery terminal on the starter for the permanent 12V source. Both are very easy to get to and run wires to.
Yeah I debated putting the box under the hood in a few different places for an hour and I thought on the frame on my 71 was going to be the best spot for me also. But I had the pass side dash apart and tucked it up in there with a few brackets I welded up and holes that were already drilled there for some reason. So that worked out just fine and all the wiring is hid plus there were 2 small holes already in the floor pan so I used them to route the wire out and to the starter and up the existing loom to the coil. That thing is like working on a diesel in a birdhouse I swear!
