Is it possible to drop and change the oil pan gasket on my '74 w/o lifting the engine? Thanks

Don't you just have to drop the steering linkage?

Correct drop the steering linkage and the pan comes off.

Give some thought to replacing the rear main seal as long as you are already in there. Also, you might wanna drop the number one main bearing cap and see what the bearing looks like, it's the farthest one from the oil pump, so it'll give you a good indication of what condition the rest of them are in. Neither procedure is particularly difficult, but there are a few thing that you need to be aware of, so if you are interested, say so, and someone will get you up to speed. While the pan is off, clean it up real nice and give it a few coats of the appropriate color engine block paint while you are at it.

Not true!! You also have to unbolt the oil pan bolts, THEN the oil pan comes off.

And remove the starter so the inspection plate comes off.
And remove the oil filter...makes geting that back bolt a bit easier and getting the inspection cover off.
I just took the two bolts out of idler arm to drop the steering linkage.

Oil pump replacement could be something to consider while oil pan is off. Replaced mine while we had pan off.

OH!! Yeah, I forgot about that! Might as well, a new stock oil pump is pretty cheap, and it's just cheap insurance.
