AFB is not a performance carb, no matter what Edelbrock calls it. There is a reason that GM switched to the Q-Jet. If your Q-Jet runs great, why not stick with that?
Great learning experience here. The net is to break the carb down, soak it in thinner or carb cleaner for a day or so blow it out and put back to gether. Bet it will work then. As Ben said ck the jets to see where they are from the factory, maybe too rich. Thanks all.
I wonder if the Edlelbrock carbs are more prone to getting sludged up when they sit for more than a couple of weeks? I have several Q-Jets that have sat for a year and run fine within a couple of minutes of fuel flushing through them.
Thanks to all for the input. I removed the idle screws, the step up rod covers and if there was a hole, I squirted carb cleaner liberally. When I put the carb back on --- presto the vacuum jumped from 15 to 18" and the erratic ideling and vacuum jumping all over was gone. I was the victim of gas drying out in the carb and forming varnish in the ports.

Never had this problem with my Edel, but as others have said watch the fuel pressure.
