Old carb and manifold combo was 30 plus years old. Always smelled gas after shutting down. Took about 15 min to start.
Two years ago new carb and manifold, same model holly but newer manifold. Still smells.
Old setup had the aluminum spacer plate left over from another project. Did not help much i think. Installed a clear gas filter to carb to see whats going on, 10-15 min small bubbles start appearing in filter bowl, lasts about 30 min.
Car starts right up when cold, warm it still starts easily. Have been thinking about a wooden spacer under the carb, i have lots of room for it. Any body using one, and did it work, keep the float bowls from boiling the gas and leaking it.
Suggestions?
If you haven't already, get rid of the clear fuel filter (fire waiting to happen). I can't remember if the '75 was the first year for the charcoal filter canister/unvented tank. Check to see if you have a cylinder mounted low behind the d/s front fender. Something may be clogged there or in the line. Do you hear anything when you unscrew the gas cap (like you're releasing presure)?
Are you sure the source of fuel smell is from under the hood ? Many times the smell is coming from tiny pinholes in the 2 fuel lines going down the passenger side of car.
They both take a couple 90s just under and behind the passenger seat. The fuel from the lines trickles out into the dirt, smells bad but never drops to the ground.
All smog related stuff long gone, no leaks, new fuel pump and lines.
Had installed glass filter bowl for inspection of what was going on, removed it. I will check the charcoal filter canister today, i think the lines are just plugged up with a cap on the ends, maybe loose or fell off.
Gas cap has been converted to vented long time ago, no pressure there.
Fuel is boiling in the float bowls at shut down i think. remove the air cleaner and i can see the gas sitting on the bottom of the manifold.
Need a way to insulate the carb from the manifold to keep the fuel cooler?
I bought this Canton Racing Products 85-152 0.5" 4-Hole Phenolic Carburetor Spacer for Holley #4150/4160 Carburetor from Amazon.com. I'm not saying it's better than wood.

The original Rochester carbs have this thick carb mounting gasket but it looks more like an insulator gasket. Here is a picture of my old one... replaced with new this Spring. I was getting a fuel smell, too. But I also removed the Rochester carb, cleaned it and tightened all the bolts/screws on the bottom of it... and on top of it. This pulled it together nicely. No leaks, no more smell.
