My dad is having some trouble with his drivers side power window on his 72 coupe. He tailored it to apple butter days and he said when he got there it rolled up about 4 inches, stopped for a second, it whined up a little more, then down, then stopped entirely, he said the right window worked just fine, so its not a fuse issue, and he said there was no noise at all when he tried it after it quit (electrical buzzing or anything)
did his motor crap out or do you think its a switch issue?
Power window issues are quite common... Where would I start with on this one? I would suspect the switch first.
Have your father watch the amp gauge on the dash, turn on the ign. key and try the window motor. If the amp deflects then the switch is fine... but I doubt it will.
If he removes the console he can use the right switch to test the left circuit and that will confirm the issue is the switch.
If the switch checks out fine then have him remove the door panel and test for power on the two wires that plug in to the motor. Both of the motor wires are power wires, one is up and one is down.
If the switch checks out ok, and you do not have power to the motor then check the conduit in the door jamb and make sure the wire isn't broken.
If you have power at the motor wires, before you remove the motor run a new ground from the motor and try it again. If this fails you have a motor problem.

dad said he turned on the ignition switch and hit the window switch and said the amp meter never bumped, so hes going to take the switch out and test it and if its bad we will give you a jingle for ordering a new one!
He seemed pretty revealed that he didn't need to take the door panel off
I just got a call from dad and he said that the switch tested out fine, 12 volts went in and 12 volts came out, so I guess the next step is the motor, Ill keep this updated
I've got a very similar problem with my '72. The drivers side window operates but very slowly. The paggenger side works great. I think I read somewhere where oxidation builds up over time on the switch contact. Could this be causing the slow response?

Is it slow going both up and down, or just up? If it goes up slow, and come down fast, then it is most likely the spring. If it is slow going both up, and down, then the most likely cause is the tracks need to be cleaned out.
If the tracks need to be cleaned, you need to take the window out, remove the tracks, and get them cleaned up with some new grease. You will be amazed at the difference.
If you have never taken one of the windows out before, I would recommend you have another person there to help. You can remove it yourself pretty easily, but it's a lot easier if you have someone helping you, and you don't have to worry about the window getting all scratched up.
just read something somewhere else that could make sense : a lot of people grease the ... out of the tracks and then they get dirt on them, which makes them not working after a couple of years (+ the grease hardens). Do a test and remove the grease and see what it does.
