Default 74 Distributor Tach Drive ?

Hi, im a little worried about my tach connection. When I unscrewed the cable the distributor rotated but when I screwed it back on it did not rotate. I heard the original distributor for my 74 is hard to replace. So, any suggestions on safely screwing it in?

I'm confused.... You mean when you removed the cable the distributor turned on the engine and now you don't know how to set the timing?

I havent tried to start it yet. My main concern was that the tach gear did not engage perfect, and so the gear could get stripped when I do start it.

When you screw the brass coupling in to the distributor the gears will mesh properly unless something is missing or damaged.

thanks, I'm sure it screwed in ok - but, I think just to be on the safe side I'm gonna pull the distributor and rescrew in the tach line, and then make sure that nothing is binding. I'd feel terrible if I killed my distributor because I got lazy.

Your post is still unclear. What part of the distributor rotated when you removed the cable. Nobody pulls their distributor to install the tach cable.

The rotor rotated slightly as I unscrewed the tach line - in other words the rotor was directly connected to the tach line. But, when I screwed the tach line back in, I didn't see the same slight rotation, so it made me think maybe the gears had not fully meshed together.

The tach cable screws onto the coupling

Did you remove the coupling from the body of the distributor?
The only part that involves meshing gears is the cross drive gear which is inside the coupling

I can pull the tach cable in an out on my '74, and it never moves the rotor. Maybe the distributor was not secured, and what you actually moved was the housing (the rotor stood still)?

The cap was off and as you unscrewed the cable the rotor moved?
Is the centrifugal advance hung up?

I think we need a picture to crack this case!
