test drove a 69 sb for sale. When shifting, there is pronounced single clunk synchronized with a release of the clutch. I kept driving and if I released the clutch a bit slower, then the no clunk was detected.
Owner (for one year) said u joints, I was thinking throw out bearing, but not sure that's correct. Only made noise shifting, not cornering or accelerating.
Any thoughts welcomed.
2nd question: Owner had "rebuilt" the steering box, but steering seemed loose for a vette, not sure how to correct that-any advice here also appreciated.
Could easily be a U-joint-after all, there are 6 of them. You might also want to look at the rag joint and the pitman and idler arms, wear at any of these will negate any gains made from rebuilding the steering box.
A worn rear end pinion bushing will cause a sound similar to that of a bad universal. They're often shot, on 63-82 Corvettes.
As far as the steering, does the car have power steering? If so, the system used in 69, gave a much lighter feel, than what you'll get from a modern car. The older PS systems were what is referred to now, as over assisted.

Thanks to all for the new insights. Hmm.. it must have ps because it was so easy to turn, but the amount of play seemed excessive.
