Default Strange Starter Noise

Hi Everyone,

Ever since my engine rebuild I've notice this problem with my starter making a high pitch whining noise right after the engine starts up. It only last a fraction of a second after I release the key. The starter didn't have any shims on it before the rebuild and I didn't shim it when I reinstalled it. The block, fly wheel and starter are the same parts that were used before the rebuild and worked fine then. The starter most often does this during first start up of the day or when I'm giving it a little gas at start up. If I don't give the engine any gas at all during start up I never hear the noise. Any and all thought as to the cause would be appreciated.....Thanks Tim

Sounds like it might be hanging in the flywheel a little to long. Try loosing the starter up and retightening. Did you use the correct knurled bolts ?

Thanks Roger,

I'll give that a try and I'm not sure if the bolts are knurled or not, they are the same one that were in there, I'll have to check....Tim

If Roger's advice fails you may want to try a shim between the starter and the block. They are easy to install and you should be able to find them at most parts stores.

The knurl is at the thread end and it helps center starter. I'm thinking because everything is the same(block and starter)you might have got it in a bit of a bind when you bolted it up. Make sure there is nothing between the block and starter case ,like wires or brackets that might force the starter over.
