Default 1973 tilt steering

Question: my 73 tilt steering has quite a bit of play in it. I can move the wheel approximately one to two inches in all directions. The tilt mechanism still works and the steering is not effected. Any ideas as to what the problem is?
Thanks John

The most common problem is that the bolts that hold the bearing housing support get loose.
In that case all you have to do is take the column apart and tighten the screws.
See items 48 in this diagram. http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/wp-co...prev26de09.pdf

In my case, the bearing housing support (item 49) and the bearing housing (item 24) both had worn bores at the pivot points, so I had to replace them to get rid of the wobble.

Use Locktite on the threads when you tighten them.

You have quite a bit of disassembly required to reach the four screws
(#48 in the above picture) that hold the bearing housing support (#49)to the support plate lock (#55). It is not impossible to locktite and retorque those 4 screws with the column still in the car but I have found it to be much easier to remove the column from the car before major disassembly. (I would remove the steering wheel first, it is easy.)

This link will take you to three papers that describe the disassembly procedure along with removing the column from the car.

This link takes you to three drawings on the procedure. The screws are on the third drawing.

Good luck,
Jim
