I am building a 406 for my 74 vette and i would like to run 1 3\4 headers. What is the best brand to run for the money. I will be using afr 195 cc eliminators for cylinder heads.
It depends on the kind of hp you expect to make.
For a 500+ hp engine I would spring for the 1 3/4" headers.
If this will be a 400 hp daily driver, buy the little ones.
On a 406, if you're springing for heads that can flow like the AFR Eliminators, I'd definitely go with 1 3/4". I run Hedmans on the smallblock in the Z28 in my avatar and have been very happy w/ them.
For a small block, your only choice for 1 3/4" headers are Hooker Super Comps. No one else makes this size for C3's. Not cheap, but they are an excellent choice. I have these on my 427 small block, and also on my former 383 with AFR 195's.
How is the fit situation with 1 3/4s??
Because the 1 5/8s will almost put themselves on for you.
Depends on your heads (angle plugs, stock, etc.), but mine went on almost by themselves with the AFR 210 Eliminators....easy fit, good spark plug access.
I haven't purchased the afr eliminators yet should i get angle plug or straight plug for header clearance?
If Hooker is your only option, as mentioned above by C3 Stroker, you should talk to both them and AFR to see what they have to say. There's another header maker that may make a 1 3/4" header for you- at least they show it in their catalog. Here's a link- http://www.originalheaders.com/catalog.htm
