OK, lets assume you're running a low HP engine. If that's the case, you could get away with running that bellhousing, but I would still install the tin shield (readily available) which can be installed without much trouble, and then add a piece of strap steel across the two lower bolts. Cheap insurance against further cracking.

If, on the other hand, you're making good power from a SB or you have a BB, get a new one. Further failure is gonna make a mess of your trans and clutch!

Paul,
there are all kinds of people in this world. Some think of an automobile just as a means to get from A to B, and would probably just say, "oh well I'll just drive it". The fact that you are in this forum and have bought yourself a true classic prtty much defines the type of person you are. Whether or not this car is brought out once a year to go to Pebble Beach, or driven only on nice sunny clear days; there's really only one appropriate answer to your question. You can pay a little now, or a lot later. Good luck, happy motoring!!!

Many run without the shields

Whatever caused it appears very recent the area of breakage looks fairly shiny still.

The running over something and it smacking the housing sounds believeable. Jack could very well be. Like trans jack

I've spoken with the shop and they said:

Is this a true? Did people remove the inspection cover in the 70's and 80's? Can I drive my car like this? Is it safe for the clutch and such. ? It seems dangerous cause rocks, dirt, etc would get inside and jam up the gears. The shop seems reputable, but this does not "smell" right.

Any input would be appreciated.
The shop is FOS they broke it and won't admit to it and there's not much you can do about it. Removing the cover to lower clutch temp, give me a break. I suppose you wanted it a little cooler so you took a hammer and broke off a few pieces of your bellhousing ?

Tell them you are filing a suit in small claims court

I suspect that the boys at GM would have made it like that if should be cracked missing a piece .. otherwise, NO it's not ok to just leave it like that. BLASPHEMY . If you are going to leave it like that then we will give you 3 demerits and you can't come to the forum for 4 weeks. Don't return until you have before & after pics. Let's have some level of decorum here. :-) I would however give you 5 points for originality in a flight judging ... the damage looks originaL.

Those cracks will just spread gotta get it fixed. No way its been like that forever. Thats a fresh break. Send the shop the bill or spend 60 bux and file small claims. Bet they reimburse you right away to avoid the hassle then move on.

I'd take this as a lesson learned. Know what your car looks like, condition, etc. before having someone work on it. A couple of questions though:

1. Why didn't the shop suggest replacing the bellhousing when they were in there?????
2. Why didn't they at least mention it - any reputable shop would have.

Lastly, fix it now before other issues arise.

BUT take it to a different shop to be properly fixed. If you dont know of one, someone here on the forum can absolutely point you in the right direction.

Incidently, what was the name of the shop you took it to? Was it a Corvette / Performance Shop or a regular Repair place?

I tell you what, if this was my car, I'd be flaming mad.

First. When I managed a shop years ago if anyone saw something like that we wouldn't remove one bolt without calling the owner! If they didn't as far as I'm concerned they did it!!! Second, I've seen a trans fall off the jack and crack the bellhousing just like that. look for tool marks on the inside of the housing. I'll bet they had too hammer it back to clear the flywheel
