Default Not ANOTHER thing to go wrong!!!!! Need some help.

After weeks of rewiring my car looking for an electrical gremlin, I finally get it all figured out. Less the week later, something else makes the car inoperable. I think my TH350 is going out. 3rd gear doesn't seem to engage. If I hold it in 1st or 2nd, the car runs fine, as soon as I put it into 3rd, the car revs like it's in neutral, until I rev it high enough to the same RPMs as it was in 2nd gear, and then it kicks in. Does this sound like my 3rd gear is out, and do you think I'll have to replace the whole tranny? Anyone know what may be causing this?? I checked the AT fluid, and it's fine. Any suggestions would be great, thanks!!

This is a shot in the dark, but is the vacuum line still connected at the transmission?

Yep...if I'm gonna have to replace the tranny, I think I'm just gonna go with a 6 speed.

Stingy74 is correct. I would add that if the vacuum line is OK, then replace the modulator valve. That is the canister that the vacuum line connects to at the transmission. It's cheap and easy to replace.

Prufrock,

I had a very similar problem w/ my 78, except the first time it happened my tranny wouldn't leave 1st. If i shifted higher, it went into neutral too. Turned out to be a 50 doller fix at the shop, something about a centrifugal coupling. Then the damn thing did the same thing, but it wouldn't leave 2nd. Another 50 dollar fix. It's very frustrating, and trust me, I know how you feel. Definintely check your vacuum line, and if you're lucky that will be the problem. The modulator valve gets blamed for a lot of things and rarely goes bad, so use your own judgement. That's just a bit of adivce another forum member gave me when mine went bad. These guys are soooooooo helpful. Good luck bud, and just remember that the feeling you get driving that bad boy is worth all the bull sh#t time you put into it.
