Default Ummm this can't be good

I finally pulled my tranny to be rebuilt today and when i got under there i noticed that all four bolts that hold the tranny to the bellhousing were missing. I have looked under there before and im pretty sure the bolts were there. I have never touched any of them though. Other than that the tranny came out real easy and without any problems. Any Ideas what caused the is and how to prevent it in the future the bolt holes do not appear to be stripped.

Are you the original owner? The reason I ask, is it sounds as if "Bubba," after the last engine pull, couldn't get the bell housing bolts to line up and...

I really don't think they simply "fell out." These bolts don't require lock tight, just normal torque specs. I think you've been bubba'd.

No I have only owned the car since last August. It has a lot of bubba work on it. I do believe the bolts were in there though because when I pulled the engine the bell housing did not fall off the tranny.

Justin,
Just for kicks replace the 4 bolts (and this time use lockwashers) and see if you still need a "rebuild" ...redvetracr

Maybe bubba didn't tighten them and they just now worked out. Install new grade 8, put dab locktite on and you are good to go.

Sounds like you need an Assembly and Installation Manual (AIM)...they run $25 at swap meets and would list the bolts, and the required torque. I would recommend not using any locktite or other such product. I do recommend inspecting the threads for wear, and if necessary cleaning them up with a tap, and a die for the bolts, unless you get new ones (doh the bolts are missing). And with used threads I recommend torqing to the higher setting in the range and "feel" to see if it torques in right or seems to stretch some which indicates that the threads are too weak and would require drilling it out and either using a helicoil or retapping for a larger diameter bolt (in the case of the tranny the helicoil should be used cause increasing the diameter of the bolt tabs on the tranny may make them too thin).

I can't believe that thing worked! The loads on the front bearing and gears would make it pretty tough to keep in gear, I would think. If it moved back or twisted much at all, the shifter would no longer work properly (unless it's a Hurst), and make it tough to shift. I'm with redvetrcr on this. Even if it's hurt, bolt it back in and at least you'll have a better idea what actually requires repair.
