Need help with brakes . please
The basics . 73 coupe 350. It is a daily driver. I parked the car last night. I get in it this morning go to start it and notice the brakes are very hard and the pedal does not soften like it should when started. start to back up and notice the I have very little stopping power. Pull the cap on the master cylinder and the back reservoir fluid looks like rust. Front looked ok.. So my question is what is the issue? master cylinder, power booster or something else?

power brake booster failure. Getting it out, not so easy.
These guys do a great job of rebuilding "your" Booster.
and you need to flush out the rusty fluid.

As said a hard brake pedal can be from a bad booster, or a bad check valve on the booster or a bad connection between the booster and the carb.
Low fluid may indicate a leak at the rear of the M/C or any of the calipers or lines, you'll have to inspect each area.
Brake fluid should be changed (by bleeding) at least every two years.
