What does a Muncie M21 weigh? I am going to pull it and am wondering what it weighs. I have a NON-removable crossmember so will have to twist and wiggle it to get it out. Was thinking about buying an adapter to put on my floor jack to make it a tranny jack but with the twisting and wiggling I am going to have to do not sure if I really need it.
Is this tranny going to crush me as it falls out onto my chest when I am under the car which will be on jack stands? Thanx for any input.
About 70lbs. Take the swivel end off your floor jack. Bolt a piece of plywood on it with a couple 12" 2 x 4s screwed about 8" apart on top. You've got a $2 trans lift. I also used it, without the 2 x 4s, for lifting a fuel tank.
Oh, and remove the trans mount ahead of the crossmember to give you a lot more room.
Sounds about right,60-70ish pounds or so.The issue is not the weight itself, but trying to get a good grip and decent leverage on that greasy monster, while laying on your back in a tight space...A fancy tranny jack won't likely help much, but something rigged on a floor jack comes in handy to rest that unwieldly beast on while you contemplate your next hold.
I weighed my M21 and it was 76 pounds. I too used my floor jack. Just know that SOME jacks will not pump enough to work when the handle is close to horizontal, like when under your car. I lucked out as my handle is 2pc and I gained some by removing the top half.
If you are reasonably strong you can bench press that puppy in and out. I did mine when I was 30, and then again 23 years later. It was harder the second time, but not impossible. If you drain the oil first, you don't have to worry about getting a face full of 90 weight. If you don't want to drain it, make sure the output yoke is in place. Remove the shift linkage first, and then the bracket that mounts the shift linkage to the crossmember. They won't R&R together very easily.
Make sure the car is high enough so that you can manuver the trans and you out from under the car. You'd hate to be stuck under there with the gearbox on your chest...

I found the floor jack was more in the way than anything...Found best way is to just lay underneath and bench press it... I seem to remember it had to go on its side then back and down by the front. That was an M22 on a 427/435.
On my 73 I replaced the frame with an automatic version with removable crossmember...nice and easy.
