I drove my 73 Corvette to an NCRS members shop for Pennsylvania State Inspection today. The car ran great for an almost thirty nine year old car. I went across the street for some fuel. I put the car in reverse and removed the keys.
I was not able to put the gear shifter in first gear. It is stuck in reverse. The car has 16,000 original miles.
Bruce was overloaded with work. I put the car on a flat bed and put it in my garage. It will be taken to Bruce's shop next week and repaired.
Any ideas on the problem? It has the original shifter with the t-bar. I always use the t-bar when I put it in reverse.
Time for a new shifter - I USED to have the same issue, masny times over - Had to get under the car to put 1st and 2nd lever back to neutral position.......Never have had issue again since replacing the STOCK shifter with a new one.

Did you go with an original equipment shifter? I owned a 66 Impala SS with a similar shifter in the seventies. I replaced it with a Hurst. The Hurst never gave me a problem. All of my brother's C-3 Corvettes had the factory shifter. They were all sloppy.
I had a similar problem with my M20. It turned out the shifter housing spread a little, it allowed the shift lever to go in between the gates after it was stuck in gear. I welded the housing, then rebuilt it using a rebuild kit from Volunteer Vette. Shifts beautifully with no slop now.
