Default torque convertor size

100% street use, do you guys think a 10" convertor will cause to much heat? Thanks

I would locate a nice 1800rpm stall converter from the aftermarket. Stock diameter and not much more heat than OEM. That is what I run with my 700R4, 3.54 spicers and warmed-over L48. Smokes the tires off the line (no neutral drop) and barks between 1-2. I got it with my 700R4 conversion from Bow-Tie overdrives. If you are 100% street use, I wouldn't go as small as 10" unless you are also mixing a lot of 'Saturday Night Special' usage.

the 1800rpm stall converter is right at the bottom end of my power curve; meaning my power REALLY takes off around 1800rpm vs. having to rev into a higher power band at launch. I essentially mash the 'go pedal' and hang on!!!

I have stock converter with 496 and roll through first and mash it in second and instant tire smoke. Engine cam and gearing determine converter size.

Isn't 1800 about stock? Not much use changing the one you got for that.
You can get a 10 inch built tight and will take right off, or stomp the gas and its like popping the clutch at 3500 rpms.

Just did this project over the summer. Installed a Vigilante 2800 stall converter on a 79. I have a complete top-end rebuild along with a rebuilt 350 tranny.

A tight 10" will work just fine. A good 10" converter isn't even noticeable until you accelerate hard.

You are probably right. I did some research and 1600-1800 is about 'stock'. Funny, with my setup the car still overpowers the tires off idle and well into 2nd. Probably due to the heavy bias toward torque when my mechanic (at the time) first rebuilt the engine and then when I added better parts over the years. A blast to drive.

Just checked and the Holeshot is still only 2,000 stall for 700R4; $320 at Summit.

My Bowtie trans is the 'Stage 2' 700R4; 2200rpm stall. I've had the trans in my C3 since 2000; no issues.

Too much heat-no not at all.
I drove around for years with an 8" and it never overheated. I have a big *** cooler though.

IMO opinion a 1800 stall isnt worth the time to install it, might as well get in the 2k range and see a noticable difference

I agree. I think mine is the 2,200 stall converter. The car is too much of a blast off the line from idle to have a 'stock' converter... I overpower the tires WAY too easy but that may be more a result of the engine setup than a loose converter

That said, it is a stock diameter converter available for under $200 from BowTie (for a 700R4) but I bet you could find a similar item for your TH350/TH400 if you look beyond Summit/Jegs.
