Default 68 Brake Caliper Problems

If anyone can asisst I am in Melbourne Australia and my 68 vette has serious problems with the calipers leaking fulid. I have been checking out the kits for sale on eBay and I am not sure what I need to do.

I have been told that you can't put kits in the calipers unless they have SS sleeves in them. If so where can I get that done will a local brake company be able to do it or is it a specialised job. Anyone that can give me advice on what to do would be appreciated.

IMO it just makes more sense to buy a set of 4 stainless steel sleeved calipers and bolt them on. Most come with extended warranties and you just don't have to mess with them again. Most of the Forum sponsors carry them.

You can also get them (remanufactured) from the major parts stores here in the states. They are very reasonably priced when you return your cores.

Have you disassembled your calipers, chances are you may not be able to rebuild them, but if there not in bad shape w/ a little work a kit may get you buy for a while, other than that I would just buy some that have been sleeved.

This is false. The inner diameter of the SS sleeves is identical to stock dimensions. This means that stock pistons and seals can be used, or any of the aftermarket stuff.

There's a high probability that your calipers are already SS sleeved. Take them part to find out.

Most calipers would have been re-sleeved by now. Clean them out thoroughly (no need to separate the sides)- if they have sleeves it will be obvious (no rust on sleeve) - use the very finest grade Crocus paper to CAREFULLY clean and remove shiney and 'high spots' on the surface of the sleeve, clean & flush out complete system, use 'o' ring seals with new pistons and Hawk HP pads and unless the car is used on a regular basis, replace with mineral fluid every year.
