All you carb experts out there, I need your opinion. which carb is overall better?? Compared to Holley, Edelbrock has only been around a short while, so Edelbrock longevity would be hard to prove. But, with things like ease of adjustment, stays adjusted, parts last, construction materials, leak prone, set it.. forget it, type criteria. Which (in your unbiased opinion) is a better over-all carb???
Edel. has the Carter AFB & Q-J, both of which have been around awhile & are proven. Some Holley guys have switched to Edel. (AFB) since their intakes are squarebore.
In the right hands any I bet most any carb can be adjusted to run great. The trick is to learn or find someone who knows how to adjust the carb to your needs. What are your driving characteristics and what do you want out the carb? Good off the line, fast as heck, good midrange with punch,.... many things to consider.
I don't know much but am learning. I decided to go with Holley so I am learning as much as possible and have my carb dialed in pretty good but still alot of smell coming out the pipes so I know I'm not there yet.
I think they can all last a long time if setup properly....
I have a 600 cfm Edel on a hi-powered Olds 350 for 10 years now, driven year-round for 10 years...snow,sleet, heat, and WI weather....never ever touched it in those 10 yrs...and its still kicking hard.... :yesnod:
thats why I went with them again....just because they have a good rep with me and I am familiar with them and longevity !
While I use holleys extensively I don't like them. When I get a new carb I usually spend about a day remachining the surfaces, scrapping the gaskets off, making screw in jets for the transfer slot and drilling the throttle plates. I can get them to run lean enough for good idle and cruising economically and still richen up at the right time. This also involves drilling the power valve passages.
I would like to try other brands but since I know how to modify a holley regardless of what i think of it I stick to them.
Guess which carb is better than Edlebrock ? - Carter !
...I've had both carbs & the Edlebrock is a "Carter" rip-off not to mention a poor quality casting. All Edlebrock does is set-up the carb a little on the 'rich' side. However due to linkage problems & clearance with my BB under the hood - I'm sticking with Holley.... it's more difficult to set up, but when a Holley is "set-up" - you get MAX power ! :D ....but the Carter is good all around street carb....definitely my choice for a small block.
I'm no expert and have run both and prefer the Edelbrock. The Holley I think you could probably get the most horse power out of if you knew what your doing. The holly seems a lot more difficult to work on, the Edelbrock are probably better for someone with less experience.
The Edelbrock was a lot easier to tune for me. I do think out of the box they run good but need rejetted for top end. After my last rejettings I can get over 6000 RPM in 1st and 2nd, haven't had the ***** to try it in 3rd "YET".
