Nothing. Just an RPO code for an engine.

Like several GM products known for their option code........L-88, Z-28, Z-71, etc.

But I do like the idea of Light the Tires 1 more time!!!

Just kidding. Tom73 is correct. It's the option code.

Alwyn678, at least on my '72 it stands for: 255 H.P.(NET H.P. at RW),Turbo-Fire 350,Special cam, 4 Bolt mains, solid lifters, internal forged materials, crank/pistons etc., fully transitorized ignition, high rise aluminium intake,4 BBL Holley 4150, # 6239 (800 CFM), finned aluminiun valve covers, open element air filter, with choice of either wide ratio or close ratio tranny, BB Hood with LT-1 striping, special console Id, 6,500 RPM tach, and a 3:70 Posi rear pumpkin. The RPO Code LT-1 was used on '70-'72 vette engines,...of over 66,000 vettes produced during '70-'72 production period less than 5,000 were of the LT-1 RPO code,.although I know nothing of C4 & C5 vettes, I do know that they used the LT-1 RPO code designation on some of the early-mid 90's vette engines,..I'm not sure but I don't think it is an RPO code for any of the C5 generation engines. I do not have a good answer but I have always been intrigued by those RPO codes also. There must be some rhyme or reason to them but....For example when the LT-1 received hydraulic lifters it became the L-82. Not an LT-2 or an LT-1B. I have nevr been able to follow the logic.

Sorry but that should be 255 H.P.(NET H.P. at the flywheel). Car companies have never rated cars as RW HP, that is a speed shop thing. GROSS HP is on an engine dyno with no accessories, no emission controls, with headers and open exhaust. NET HP is also on an engine dyno with all standard accessories, all emission controls, stock exhaust manifold and stock exhaust and mufflers, stock air filter assembly. Gross is total possable power, Net is real world power as installed in the car.

Other than the high rise manifold and the solid lifters whats the big deal about an LT-1 versus a 350 hp L-46 other than low production numbers?

Your right on Tom '73 and the other posters , I stand corrected, it was net 255 H.P. at the flywheel only with all accessories etc. hooked on instead of the old gross horsepower without anything bleeding off those ponies that the '70 LT-1 370 H.P. with 11:1 compression ('71/'72 dropped to around 9:5, 9:1 compression to run regular gas) and the '71 was rated at 330 gross H.P. I believe except the '71 did have a 270 net H.P. rating as it was the cross over rating year,...for the other poster who asked what's special about the LT-1?,..just drive one and you'll see,..it's not much compared to today's technology and aftermarket changeouts but in '70-'72, 30+ years ago, these original factory set-up small blocks could stay right up there with some of the factory BB rat motors in the quarter and at the track courses due to higher revs, lighter block and rear end ratios which in those days gave the car great handling too. Guess that's why they called it the mouse that roared!! Thanks for keeping me straight!!! Tom Save The Wave!!!
