fuel gauge problem

fuel gauge problem
Hello. I recent purchased a fuel tank sending unit for a 79 vette. I pre tested it before sticking it in the tank to verify if the gauge worked, and the gauge still did not read correctly. I have check resistance through the sending unit and it was 0-100 ohms. I used new seperate wires (ohm wire and ground) to go from the sending unit to the gauge and still did not get a correct reading. If i touch the ohm wire to the ground wire at the sending unit my gauge will go full range across the gauge (though the low fuel light never comes on it does go from empty to past full). Anyone have any idea what i can check next or what my problem might be?

You have a ground issue..... double check your sending unit ground and if this doesn't correct the issue look at the printed circuit in the dash.
