i have a 82 corvette with 400 small block with a edelbrock carb.
my friend mentioned to me to remove the cat converter and put on a muffler like magnaflow or dynomax super turbo around where the cat converter is removed and remove the rear mufflers and replace them with straight pipes.
is this a great idea?
how about the exhaust sound inside the car since the muffler will be under the car same or around the location where the cat converter is remove?
is there enough room around/at the location where the cat converter is; to put a muffler there and what size muffler should i get? round or oval?
will this produce a good exhaust sound and not too much drone and loud to disturb the peace inside the car and outside?
all ideas, advice are welcom before i do something that i will regret.
Well, since its already a modified engine, I would go with a complete set of true duals and SS mufflers. The mufflers for a vette are oval and mount under the back end on either side of the spare tire carrier. Long tube headers, do it right once and be done, you will not regret it. Chopping up the stock system will get you close but it will always be a cludge
It sounds like your friend has it backwards, the usual thing to do is to put a straight pipe in place of the cat, and install new mufflers in place of the old mufflers. If your cat's outer casing is in good shape, one thing you can do is remove it, smash all the crap out of it with an iron pipe or rod, and re-install it. Better flow, a little louder, and basically free.
