Is there any Ryhme or Reason

I ordered a new shifter repair kit for my '72 4-speed. Include is a BLACK shifter ball, not CHROME like the one on my car. So I start looking around at pics and it SEEMS to be random - some 4-speeds have CHROME ***** and some have BLACK ***** - What gives ????

Anybody know when which was used where ?

Black ***** are the ones that are driven to hard.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I think the shifter ball color was to match up with the interior color. Mine is black and is original.

The '73 came with "black" chrome shifter ball. Don't know about the 72.

So MAYBE it is :

1. interior specific
2. year specific

any other ideas

As far as 68-73, it's year specific. The 68s had chrome and in 69 they went to black chrome which was used through 73. Not sure what they used after that. I will tell you that prior to finding one at a local show, I ordered a new one from Zip and sent it back because it had a dull black finish instead of the black chrome that was NOS.

:yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: See, I've been telling everyone on the forum that '68s are special - but nobody listens to us '68 owners... :lol: We ARE the ONLY C3's with Chrome shift ***** !
Everyone else should have the 'black' chrome shift *****.....sorry guys - get a '68 if ya want more chrome ! :lol: :lol: :lol:
