Default Clearance Problem

Ok, I'm getting ready to stuff a 468 BBC into my 1981...I have run into the problem of the vacuum booster being in the way of the the oversized valve covers. I see there is a hydroboost solution for this, but that is way outside of my budget. Are there any other solutions for this? Any help or addvice would be greatly appreciated...

You are TheMadScientist, so just cut the booster in half. ? Uh Huh. Do you really need the tall valve covers? Sometimes people install them "because"... and they are not really needed. Just a possibility... shot in the dark.

Yes, I really need the tall valve covers...I have a roller valve train set up and the roller rockers need the space of a tall valve cover. I did think about modifying the booster, but I couldn't find any info on doing that.

Roller rockers will fit under short covers as long as you arent running a stud girdle.
Using thick valve cover gaskets helps.

Are you locked in using the oversize valve covers? I've seen many BBC with roller rockers that have valve covers clearing the brake booster.

Sorry, too slow replying!

I guess I could take off the stud girdle since this will really only be driven on the street. Thick valve cover gaskets is a great idea...thanks!

Get rid of that bulky booster. Who needs power brakes anyway

I've seen motors that have a valve cover with a modded corner to make booster clearance

yep,

I looked around for a smaller booster but couldn't find anything that would work.

I opted for the Hyda-boost but I do understand the limits of a budget.

There are covers out there that have the tapered edge that might work for you. The chevy style have the tapered top but they are rather expensive, you might look around and see if you can find some of the cheap chrome ones with the tapered top that you could try.

The tapered valve covers are not required to clear the booster on an '81.

Tall edelbrock covers will clear. I put a set on mine intending on them being temporary. Purchased fabed covers later and they wouldnt fit, either side. Booster on one side ac box hit on the other.

for the fabed covers on mine I had to mod the AC box and the drivers side cover on the lower rear corner to clear.

I guess I should have said that with the short valve covers you don't need the tapered ones.

I had a set like that once, stamped steel with hammer & anvil shaped corner. It suited my tight budget at the time.

Since you are a Mad Scientist, why don't you just invent a way for them to both occupy the same space at the same time? Perhaps you are too busy trying to take over the world. Still, a Temporally Phased Transmogrification Array would probably do the trick, and shouldn't be too much for a Mad Scientist to come up with. Are you by any chance an Evil Genius, also? That would make it really easy!

Seriously, I think you are going to have to choose between shorter valve covers, modded valve covers, or manual brakes. Not much else you can do without parting with some coin. Do what you gotta do, and get that thing out tearing up the street, brother!!!
