Head Lights Flicker Dim to Bright

I made my maiden night voyage the other evening in my 71 and have an issue with the head lights. They started out working fine but flickered and went dim then back to bright back then back to dim and so on. Its not the kind of dim that gets brighter when you rev the engine that is related to the alternator. When in the dim state the turn signals do not flash but when I switch the head lights off the signal flash again. I thought maybe it was ground related but the ground looks OK.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Sounds like a ground issue to me. A bad ground can often "Look O.K." and only looks bad when it is removed.

Update

Well it turned out to be the alternator after all. Replaced it tonight and the lights are brighter and do not flicker.
