Default AIR Reinstallation Help

I've put the AIR system on my 70. Everything seems to be working except there is a backfire in the exhaust on the driver side. The backfire occurs when the throttle is released and is not present with the driver side AIR hose disconnected. Any ideas what the problem is or things to check?

Thanks

On the ex manifold tubes where the rubber hoses connect is a blow back valve. It's the diaphram shaped piece threaded onto the pipe assembly that the rubber hose then connects to. Essentially a one way valve for the low pressure air from the pump. That's the first place I would look. Remove it and see if you can blow both ways through it. If you can it's ng.

I checked that valve. Air only blows one way.

The diverter valve, located on the rear of the pump, before the hoses, needs to have an unported (full time) vacuum signal. The high vacuum created by a quickly closing throttle causes the diverter valve to divert the air from the hoses and manifolds to the vent. (That's why they were often installed on manual shift cars only). If the diverter valve is getting full time vacuum, and the engine still pops on the overrun, the diverter valve is not working. Replace it.

Thanks. That's probably my problem. The little hose from the diverter is disconnected.
