Not on the vette, but one of our other cars, we got a flat due to a cut stem from a mis-aligned hubcap. My Q is, will the tire have to be busted off the rim to replace the cut stem? Thanks for your time in responding.
I am almost 100% positive that the stem can be installed from the outside of the rim - they just pop into place. I assume they need a sealant around them like the tire bead has, but I can't imagine that the tire would have to come off. Interesting question, though - I always had mine replaced when I changed the tires and never thought anything about it!
yup after taking a close look at it it appears that the tapered outer portion of the stem is designed to be inserted thru the inside of the rim. Oh well , remount rebalance the tire and a new stem..hmmm $15 is my guess. The tire is in good shape and worth it. Thanks again. Now to take it off the car and toss it in the truck to drop off tomorrow.
$15 for replacing a valve stem seems high. I get flats fixed with an inside patch for $8, and to do that they have to remove the tire, patch it, replace the valve stem, mount tire and balance it.
To replace the stem all they really have to do it is, mark tire to rim, open one side of tire, put in new stem, remount one side. If they are good, the tire will not move on the rim and they will not have to balance if the mark is aligned and the tire is back in the same spot. If they want more than $10 bucks they should throw in some grease for you while they are bending you over.
gerry c, LOL thats funny. Actually, since I do almost all of my own work its been a long time since I took a bent over reaming  . Are you tellin me that they wont even provide the lube??? Damn....I got some mobil1 synth grease in my gun right now. Maybe I should consider a squirt or two of that for pre-lube before I go in. LOL
