Rear bearing question
I know to remove and replace the rear bearings in the C3 is an ugly process. I understand to do this it takes a lot of special tools. But that is to remove and replace the bearings.
What if I just want to re-grease them?
Do I need all these special tools if I don't plan on removing the bearings from the spindle? I don't think I would need a bearing puller or a "set up" tool, right ?
I just want them re-greased. If they are damaged, then I will take them into the shop and have them done by a Vette specialist. But I just want to do some preventive maint. on them and hope that it is a 2 hour / 6 pack job needing little cusing and no special tools.
I can't see any way you could grease the outer bearing without removing the inner one. You can grease the inner with a special tool they sell.
If you were able to remove the inner bearing (and thereby remove the spindle), then you could grease both bearings. Then reinstall without any special tools other than something to remove and reinstall that inner bearing.

Doesn't the inner bearing just slide onto the spindle ? I know the outer -- the one closest to the brakes is a press fit. But I thought the inner - closest to the rear end housing just slide on similar to the outer bearing on the front spindel
I agree with lbell101. I just went through this to remove the bearings, I had to press the spindle out to get the bearings off. You might be able to use that grease tool but I think that you have to press out the spindle to get to the outer bearing, they are on there tight. If you do that you might as well redo the whole thing. There is just no easy way to grease that assembly that I know.
As said, you have to press the spindle out. Both bearigns are a press fit unless someone else was in there in the past and polished the spindle for a slip fit. Pressing the spindle off the bearings could wreck them, if you're going to go to the trouble of doing that you should just rebuild the arm.

Bryan... I just happened to be looking at Corvette Central's latest catalog and it has a rear spindle bearing greaser in it for $10.95, part number 582416. Might be worth a try for the price. They mention use also shown in GM Shop Service Manual. I'm too lazy to go out to the garage and get the manual to check it out right now.
How's the Arizona portion of the Stars & Stripes Cruise going? Please email me with details when you can.
That's the same tool the others were talking about--it's sort of a cup with a grease fitting that forces grease into the inner bearing. It still leaves the outer bearing dry, and probably forces grit into the bearing with the grease, so it's kind of a dicey fix.

well crap, I guess I will just buy the rebuilt spindles / bearings from Zip and do it that way.
