I'm about to recharge my A/C. I have the original compressor (the short one) and components on my 77. The A/C hasn't worked in about 6 years. What all needs to be done or should be done? Plus, should I convert to R-134??
Boy, you said that it has not worked in six years? First of all has the system been open all that time? If so, rotts of ruck rastro! Lets say it was just low on freon but still has some pressure. To convert properly you must without a doubt change the filter dryer, drain all the oil out of the compressor, change the orifice tube at the condensor, flush all the internal components of original oil, change all seals to new compatible seals for the new oil, swap to new lines compatible to the new oil, service the compressor with new oil, put everthing together and vacume leak check it. The system now uses bigger valves for seviceing and you can get those with seals and oil at the auto parts place.
Now thats the perfect world. On to my world, myself I change the filter dryer, orifice tube, bought a conversion kit at schucks, some flush for the lines and kept my old hoses. Changed the oil, switched the seals, evactuated the system and recharged to about 75% of the r12 capacity(give or take). To much r134 and your evaporator can freeze and you'll be getting warm again. and cool cruising.
I would go 134. Latter. Scott
