Default minor problem/question

i've had my car for almost a year now i just realized that my keys can be pulled from the ignition while the car is on. useful for quick runs into the house or a store since i can lock the doors and leave her running, but i'm just wondering if this is normal or not.

No. i think the tumblers in your ignition switch are bad or your keys are really worn down with no discernible "points" on them

No shouldnt be like that. I'll bet that you could even start it up with any GM ignition key that looks somewhat similar to it.

Certainly not normal for my 72 or my friend's 73. I assume the lock cylinder is similar if not the same. Btw, my local locksmith carries the exact replacement cylinder for around $25 plus a re-keying charge. It takes about an hour to remove and replace this cylinder. You might want to wander on down to your favorite professional locksmith and ask him to make you a cylinder that fits your key. Then, on your next day off, you can replace the old lock cylinder with the new. The procedures are in your GM Service Manual. You DO have the GM Service Manual for your car don't you? ;)

I drive that way all the time. My keys are kept in my pocket...just in case.

I had an old 77 chevy 1 ton pickup that you could do that with. I loved it, very convenient. No it's not supposed to be that way, but I would like to make all my vehicles ignitions work like that.
