[ENGINE] Need help identifying noise...
Hello All,
First I thought it was the exhaust rattling. Then I was in denial. Now I finally admit it: there's some weird noise coming from my engine. (Strangely, now that I admitted it, the noise didn't happen this morning.)
Here are the symptoms:
-It's sort of a high pitched rattling noise.
-It seems to come from the bottom of the engine.
-It only happens for a few seconds, when I start the car.
-It's affected by the engine rpm.
-It's not related to whether or not the engine is cold. If I turn off the engine, wait for a few minutes, and restart it, the noise happens, even with the engine hot.
So, what could that be? Do I have a bearing replacement in my future? :(

Dukman,
I don't think so--I don't have a heat shield on my starter (I have a mini starter wrapped in a blanket), don't have spark plug shields, I only have the spark plug boomerang shields, so there's not much there to cause that noise. That being said, I do need to put the car on ramps and start the car, and take a closer look at it... Haven't gotten too deep into it yet.

Just drive and enjoy the vette till something breaks, if nothink breaks then you are laughingif something does then you will know what it is. When I bought my 1st new car I kept on hearing strange noises The service mangers advice was TURN UP THE RADIO and enjoy the drive

73-454: don't even need the radio; the chambered exhaust is loud enough! Maybe that's why I only hear the noise when I start the car. :D
Ganey: I'm not sure what the balancer ring is, but I'll take a look at the front of the engine, and see if there's anything out of place....
SprintCarDriver: the oil pan is in good shape. Or at least it was in good shape, last time I checked, but since I haven't hit anything, I'm assuming it's OK.
Any other ideas?

An old trick for finding engine noise, if you think it's coming from the engine, is to take a big screwdriver and place the tip on the engine, and the handle in your ear. This will transmit the engine noise and allow you to search until you find the source of the offensive noise. It's a cheap substitute for a cheap stethoscope. It's also a sure fire way to make you look really dumb. And it can be really dangerous.

It's also a sure fire way to make you look really dumb.
I actually have a stethoscope, and I already feel stupid enough when using it! I guess what I'll have to do know is put the car on ramps, start it a few times, and try to figure out more precisely where the sound is coming from.
Vettesite: I have no AC, and the water pump is brand new, so I think those are ruled out.
What puzzles me is that it only happens when I start the car...

Steve: thanks, but no, the sound happens after I start the engine, for one minute or so, and not while I'm cranking.

how about the exuast flap in the pass. side manifold,they do make a tingy kind of sound when you first start them up when they are going bad,just another thought.also if its an automatic what if the bolts in the convertor starting to come loose..or a cracked flywheel too.

Thanks, Pat! I'm not sure what's this exhaust flap you're talking about, but that's a "stock" manifold thing, isn't it? I have headers... I'll check the convertor bolts and flywheel.
However, it seems that the noise has ceased now that I've admitted that it exists :confused: :lol:
