A friend of mine just got his 68 427/390 back from a local restoration shop. Two problems he's trying to figure out:
1 - when sitting at idle in neutral there is a squeeking noise fom the front of the trans. The shop replaced the throw out bearing, but when the clutch pedal is depressed the noise goes away, even with only slight pressure on the pedal. Pilot bearing??
2 - the other is the trans popping out of 4th gear. I drove the car last night & the transmission fells fine. Shifter (hurst) has more throw to 1st & 3rd than to 2nd & 4th. The shop adjusted the linkage twice. I told him to have the shop check the stop adjustments on the poopieer also. Any other ideas?
Other than a new shop :D Already suggested that, but this is a friend of his.
1. Sounds like the T/O bearing to me. Did they install it properly (with the fork tabs inside the groove)? Can you pull on the clutch pedal, does that make a difference in the sound?
2. It could be the stops. Jumping out of forth is unusual. I would double check to see that the transmission is bolted down tight to the bell housing.
Make sure there's enough play when the clutch is disengaged (i.e., foot off). If it's close the bearing will contact the clutch arms all the time and wear out faster. I don't know what the standard is, but I keep mine to where there's a good portion of an inch between the pedal "at rest" position and where you feel it start to contact the actual clutch (the pressure gets harder).
