I am considering a new crate motor to replace a L-48. What motor is good for everyday driving and something that will push me back in the seat more than the old L-48. Also im considering a new transmission what do you guys reccomend and how much am I looking at to install a new motor? How hard is it since the old block is a two-bolt and the new one a four-bolt? Thanks in advance.
Sounds like you'd like a new GM ZZ4 crate engine. 355hp 405 torque would put ya back in your seat plus it comes with a good warranty. They run about $3500 for the motor, I've heard installation runs about $500. Is there something wrong with your trans?
Do a search for ZZ4 in the archives to find much more info.
A lot of people think of motor mounts when they hear two-bolt, and four-bolt main. This term refers to how many bolts hold on the crankshaft main bearing caps, most engines use two for each cap, higher performance engines use four. This is all inside the engine, so it shouldn't effect your installation at all.
Every Chevy V8 has two motor mounts, so that shouldn't be a problem.
I put a ZZ4 (385 FB) with a hot cam in my '70, and let me tell you that will put you back in your seat.. Salle Chevrolet in Milton Freewater OR has the best deal I have seen.
A friend just put a Ramjet 350 into his 60 Corvette. He loves it, saying it's so much better than the 327 he had in it in every way. He also says it was an easy install even with the FI ;) .

Please let us know more about this swap. Many of us have considered the RamJet 350 for a swap, but can't get solid info about whether or not it will fit under a stock small block hood. I haven't found anyone who actually has made this swap, and though I'm sure the clearance in a 60 Vette is different, it would sure be nice to hear about the details of the swap. Pictures would be great too. Thanks.
I'll see what I can do for height measurements & snap some pics this weekend. I fit under his stock hood fine :yesnod: . He had to install an electric fuel pump for the FI, but there was only 1 positive wire that went thru the firewall, all the rest were under the hood :D .

While I don't have a RamJet, I did fit a TPI under my C3 hood. I had to carve the 1982's inner hood passage wall out, but it fits. Figuring out where to put an air cleaner is a bit of a challenge.
If you are worried about cost the GM Goodwrench motor looks pretty good at about 1,200.00. Its about 220 hp stock and CHP or one of those mags did a 450 hp builup on on one of these. I guess it depends on budget and how much know how you have.
