You've dug up a very old thread (2002).

I would order a new heater core but have a local rad shop pressure test it and fix any dodgy soldering. I'm not sure the quality is out there these days for these items.

Just completed my 69 small block no AC heater core. I was able to do it from engine compartment but to do it 100% correct it will need to be done from inside the car. The only thing I was not able to complete 100 % correctly is the clip on the right side of heater core ( facing the windshield) had to be removed and it could not be reinstalled. The clip on the left side is on and heater core is very secure. couple hour job taking your time.
