Default Air Cleaner Question

Merry Christmas everyone,
I had a quick question regarding air cleaners.
I have a chrome after market flat bottom base w/ open style air cleaner on my 427 w/ q-jet presently.
It was placed on the car before I purchased the car as stock base woud not fit previously installed Holley.
Holley removed before I purchased by PO.
Clearance is very minimal with this flat bottom base as a slight riser must
be used between air horn and base so accel pump lever on q-jet clears.
What I'd like to do is go back to the stock base with attachments mounted on top of a q-jet.
Will I be losing any performance by returning the base to stock configuration?
I'm asking this as the crankcase ventalation will be returning to the base.
Right now it has a Morosso breather on top of the P/S valve cover venting to the atmosphere.
Concerns include moving air flow lower means hotter air entering the carb.
Thanks for the advise in advance.

The factory air cleaner had a bit of a curved bottom and top cover that tends to nicely direct the air flowing into the carb. Get a K&N or similar type element for a stock air cleaner. If the origional air cleaner enclosure was an open element type, you might be able to get a slightly taller element, with the same diameter, and a longer 1/4-20 stud, as long as you clear the hood. I was able to do that with my '74. You can measure the hood clearance by putting some small pieces of SOFT clay on top of the air cleaner, and then carefully closing the hood. Open it and see if the clay got squashed.
As long as it fits, you can't make the air cleaner too big. Chevrolet puts 8"(!) tall filter elements in their medium trucks.

This should be what you are looking for. It normally uses a 3" tall filter but using the above clay method may alllow you to go to 4" tall.

I made my own drop base Air Cleaner,
I bought a generic cheap flat bottom breather 3" element,
traced about 3/4" inside the element, cut the bottom out.
and welded in a 1.5" steel strip, to drop it down.
(make sure it drop down around your carb.)
