I have a 76 vette and just changed the fuel pump. I had some hesitation issues and seemed erratic until it warmed up. Then this morning was driving it and it started to sputter then died! Can the fuel pump be bad? Bought it at autozone store and it's just the regular type they sell for my model and year car. Should I just replace it and see or maybe buy the performance edelbrock? I just drive it normal but would it be better? Any suggestions?
Sputtering could be an assortment of issues. When was the last time you tuned her up? (new plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, etc., re-set the timing, etc.)
Another thing to check or replace is the rubber fuel lines, if there is a crack they can suck air and you won't get enough fuel. Especially the fuel line by the tank.
The stock pump for your car will do just fine and I doubt that a new one would be bad. They are very simple devices. You have something else wrong besides the pump.
I would bet on a plugged filter as was mentioned above.
Replaced fuel filter and plugs and had carb rebuilt before this. It is not getting gas to the carb. I have one of the glass fuel filters and it's not pumping fuel. It will start for a second then die. It sat for 18 years so maybe something broke loose from the tank and lodged in the fuel line.
