my backups are on all the time. it's kind of embarassing because to me, it's like having your turn signal on constantly (and i'm not old enough to be able to get away with that yet). anyways, my mechanic just had the transmission out to fix some leaks and he says that the neutral safety (i think) switch needs to be replaced. it's gonna cost me $120. i trust my mechanic, but this problem never occured before the transmission was out of the car. could it be something else? thanks.
The backup light switch is on the transmission and it's engged by a link connected to one of the shift levers. If it was reinstalled incorrectly, then I suspect it could be positioned so the switch is always closed (lights always on). The switches aren't cheap, $40-50 or so if I recall. If you'd rather have them OFF all the time until you fix the problem, there should be a connector on the front side of the firewall. Kinda L shaped on my car with 2 wires going into it. Unplug that and your lights will be off.
The switch is mounted backwards. Been there, done that.
Done that also. The other explanation(beside a bad switch) is that the arm that connects the switch to the revers linkage popped off. If it helps here's what the setup looks like on a '69. If the switch is bad it's around $50 for a new one.

ok, first off, let me state that i know very little about mechanics in general, but am very eager to get my my hands dirty and fill my head with knowlege. that being said, i just came from underneath the vette after changing the switch around and my problem seems to be solved. the wires were facing the back of the car and i switched it around and the backups seem to be cooperating. i'm still in the trial stage since the lights wern't ALWAYS on, but i'd say 90% of the time. but so far, so good. what angle does the switch need to be on, or do i just need to play with it until it works like it should? thanks everyone. corvetteforum rocks!

When I mounted the new switch under my Vette, I took an ohm meter under there with me. Put the test pins in the leads from the switch, hooked up the reverse linkage and worked it through it's range of motion. When the ohm meter showed the switch opening and closing the way it should, that was where I tightened the nuts.
