Just finished restoring my '74 and the tach started squeaking then it became very sluggish. I pulled the cable and gear and relubed and it made no difference. I disconnected. Anybody have any experience rebuilding tachs, where do you get parts, GM?
I am not sure if GM still sells the parts to rebuild a mechanical tach, but if not, almost all of the Corvette vendors do. Try Ecklers, Zip (you can find a link for Zip on the forum), Mid America, Corvette Central, and others. It pretty much consists of pulling the tach, removing the mechanical part and needle from the face, and installing the new mechanical part.
Try lubing the cable first,if that doesn't work try a new inner cable and make sure the existing cable doesn't have any sharp turns or bends...john :chevy
I am no expert, but I just fixed the tach on my 71 roadster. Turned out it was the cross gear thrust button. I didn't even know what the heck it was until Lars gave me some pointers. The thrust button sets in a hole at the end of the cross gear housing. It helps to keep the cross gear in line with the distributor shaft. My original plastic button was trash. Replaced it with a bronze one from Mid America for $6. That did the trick on mine. You may want to check this out. You will have to pull the distributor.
